Researchers Find Dogs Can Distinguish Between Languages – Nozomi Tahara

Laura V. Cuaya at Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest is one of researchers and had led to study about the difference between different languages from dogs. Because she moved to Hungary from Mexico a few years ago and brought her dog Kun-kun with her.

Then, she wondered whether her dog noticed that people in Budapest spoke a different language, Hungarian.

At first, for their study, the researchers played recordings of the story "The Little Prince" in both Spanish and Hungarian to a group of 18 dogs. Then they examined how the animals’ brains reacted. In addition, her dog and other dogs were trained to lie down in a brain scanner for several minutes during the experiment.

Next, every dog in the study had heard only one of two languages spoken by their owners - either Hungarian or Spanish. Then they compared how their dogs brains reacted to a highly familiar language and to a completely unfamiliar one. The dogs listened to parts of “The Little Prince” in Spanish and Hungarian. They also played scrambled versions of the story to test if dogs could hear the difference between speech and non-speech.

Then, when comparing brain reactions, they found clear activity in the dogs’ primary auditory – or hearing – area of the brain. That suggested that they can distinguish between speech and non-speech.

Finally, they found that the dogs’ secondary auditory area is for understanding complex sounds. She said that the study found for the first time that a non-human brain can “distinguish languages.” Raul Hernandez-Perez is a co-writer of the study, and he said that when dogs live with humans, they can learn patterns of the language they hear. Thus she said that dogs could understand the differences in how the two languages are spoken. Needless to say, they also found that the older the dogs were, the better they were able to distinguish between the two languages.

At the end of it, I found that dogs can understand the differences in how the two languages are spoken even if they live various places. I mean, dogs are smart (intelligent) and good adaptability. In some instances they also become a therapy dog, and they will help to effect allay a patient's anxiety. On the other hand, the other study found no clear benefit from the therapy dogs. The media, however, reported that the study did find benefits. As a result, people might think animal therapy affects long-term human health more than it does. To live together with dog in our life, it may have good point, but also may have bad point. That said, dogs dispensable presence for us, we need work together for mutual harmony and benefit.

  1. Fascinating study. As a dog owner I would say that dogs can also understand numerous words in the language of their caregiver. My dog for instance seems to know very clearly the meaning of commands such as "Wait" & "Cross the road" and nouns such as "treat", "walk" and "beach." He is also bilingual, understanding both "Sit!" & "Suwate!"

I am interested with dogs have a high potential, and how to understand the other countries languages after they move from current living country to new living county.
      It’s really mysterious things!
I would like to try teaching the other language word for my dog as same as your dog is bilingual.

      Thank you very much.

  3. This story is interesting for me because I have learned psychology of leaning. Dogs might learn a difference of sounds and accents in languages. And Mr. David wrote a comment for you, his dog canunderstand two languages in same meaning. So, I am surprised dogs may know some types to say commands! They are so inteligent, as you wrote. Thank you for introducing!

  4. I'v heard that dogs and human have a similar range to hear sound, but the research that dogs can distinguish languages made me surprised! We human have lived with dogs since very long ago, so perhaps such history is also related to the ability of dogs to distinguish languages.

    1. Hi Kazuki,

Thank you for reading my blog.
As you mentioned, I think that dogs can also understand distinguish the differences their owners voice and the other languages, even if dogs move from current place to new address where other country.

Unfortunately, we cannot communicate with dogs so easily, but we can imagine dogs thought.
If possible, I prefer talking with my dog with the same languages, but we must understand distinguishing between what is real or what is imaginary.

If my dog can speak Japanese, I would love to talk with him directly.☺

Thank you for taking an interest!🍀

    1. Hi Chinatsu,

Thank you for your comment about my blog.
      You are right!
Exactly, I chose a story of dogs related, but tell the true, I had chosen the other story at first.
Well, you know, for example, I only wanted to share my opinion that dogs can understand distinguish the differences even if they move from country of residence to other country.
If we move to live from native country to other countries, we need to speak other language.
We cannot speak other languages as same as native so easily.
So, dogs need to understand their owner spoken languages are different from other languages, that people in other countries are spoken by the difference language.

If you are misunderstanding it, I really apologize for confused you this story.😢

Thank you very much for your cooperation.
