Scientists Find First Evidence of Respiratory Sickness in Dinosaur-Hinata Nishizawa
A research team discovered evidence that a dinosaur was suffered from an illness related to breathing system. The evidence was found from fossils in state of Montana, America.
The dinosaur
seemed to be closed to Diplodocus, like a picture. She was named "Dolly".
The illness was thought most common disease of bird today. Also, this sickness can cause bone infection. In Dolly's case, three bones of her neck had abnormal growth. Scientists thought the condition gave Dolly bad effects.
It is rare that evidence of illness is found from fossilized dinosaur. Furthermore, this was a first case that respiratory sickness' signs were discovered from fossil.
Carry Woodruff and Lawrence Witmer wrote an article about this finding. Woodruff said the discovery provides new information about the medical conditions of dinosaurs, as well as details about the structure of the creature's breathing system.
Also, Witmer considered to three unanswered questions. "Was Dolly so sick that she couldn't keep up with the herd? Did she die from this disease? Did she die alone?" he said.
I choose
this article because I didn’t hear such discover before. Also, I’m interested
in how to research fossils. After I read the sentences, I learn we can get much
more information from fossils than I thought. I’m surprised about it and want
to know more research about fossil.
I knew the evidence was discovered from fossil of dinosaur. That is interesting.
ReplyDeleteI understood dinosaurs get sick.
Very cool news story and insightful response to it. I wonder if this finding will pave the way for researchers to revisit previously found fossils to examine what diseases and conditions they might shed light on.
ReplyDeleteDavid :-)
I was really surprised to know that we could find the evidence of respiratory sickness from their bones! That was the most interesting thing in your summary for me. I'm sad to imagine how Dolly suffer with her disease😢 Anyway, thank you for your sharing!

Hi, Hinata! This story is very interesting for me. I wanted to know about how a research team understood from fossils and what shape three bones of Dolly's neck are so on. And I thought I will try to search about fossils.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to know that fossils are very useful to research diseases. I think if people analyze the fossils and some of new one more, three unanswered questions will become clear in the future.
ReplyDeleteHI, Hinata!
ReplyDeleteI first learned of this discovery on this blog. I was surprised to learn that the name of the disease can be identified from fossils. I think that there is more information in fossils too.
Thank you!

Hi Hinata,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your fascinated story.
I understood what you taught, and it makes me a lot of imagination, I think.
As you informed, the evidence of fossil will give much treasure or dream for us.
I mean, fossils or bones will be given much information for us.
I was so exciting to know it.
And I hope that you would continue to raise an intriguing case for us from now and so on.
Thank you!
Nozomi☺
I also surprised that they could find the dinosaur had illness by the fossil!
ReplyDeleteWhether Dolly died alone or not is interesting theme so I want the researchers to solve it!
