Musician Seeks to Rebuild Iraq through Music - Aono Inoue
Naseer Shamma is 59-year-old and he was born in the southern city of Kut. He is considered a master oud player. In 1993, he fled Iraq because of Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship. During the time, he played an active part around the world in various situation. But in 2012, he returned to Iraq and he was shocked to see his country because he didn’t know Iraq’s situation. After he return, Iraq also had many battles just like before.
He thought that Education is the solution and answer for the future of Iraq. So, he used money gained from the concerts for Iraq. For example, improving the Music and Ballet School in Baghdad and rebuilding 21 destroyed main squares so on. Furthermore, he used his fame to support causes that help people. It is not only these things but also he has some ideas of other projects for the country’s reconstruction. Because these actions were recognized, he became a UNESCO peace ambassador.
Thus, he could rebuild his country to support culture and education and make people feel positive through music. Music have power that make things better.
I have two reasons I chose this topic. First, I wanted to tell my classmate that music has a special power. Second, when I see this headline, I couldn’t come up with how to rebuild country by music. So, I wanted to know it. After I read this story, I could think my various experience of music may be useful for something.
Great story & great response. Shamma's dedication to the cultural renaissance of his country is admirable. Music can indeed have a positive impact, bringing cultural pride, comfort and joy.
