David Woodfield

Hi, my name is David Woodfield. I live in Dunedin, NZ, together with my wife, Patricia, our dog, Neo, and our daughter’s cat, Beetlejuice.

I’m teaching this course in fulfilment of my duties as a teacher at the University of Otago.

My likes include reading, watching TV and walking. I like reading books about faith, art & society. As for TV, I enjoy watching romantic movies. I like walking from my home to my office and taking Neo for walks around my neighbourhood.

I’m not a fan of waiting in queues, eating chocolate that has a sticky or chewy centre, or trying to figure out what’s wrong when my computer isn’t doing what I want it to do.

As you know, I am an English language teacher. I enjoy my job because I am interested in language and I like working with people from a variety of cultures.

As for my good point, I would say it is that I’m optimistic. My bad point though is ‘leaving things to the last minute.’

My goal is to be a better person.

    Hi, David! I was surprised to know that you have both cat and dog. I would like you to tell their characteristics. I'm glad that you are interested in language and that I am taught from you. I will enjoy this class 1 more week!

      Hi Saika, we have had a dog for 10 years or so, but we have only had a cat for about 3 months. We have been enjoying having Beetlejuice though. He is so warm and friendly, and loves to curl up and chill on our laps. Neo, our dog, is a blessing too. Even though he is over 10 years old, he is still very energetic. His favourite thing is to go for a walk along the beach, or I should say a 'run' along the beach.

    Where was the picture taken? You look happy with plants which I haven’t never seen before!
    About your likes, reading books about art, what kinds of art do you like? I was impressed when I saw ‘Ophelia’ painted by John Everett Millais. I’d like to see it in real someday.

      Hi Yu, this picture was taken at 'the Golden Mount' in Bangkok. I was enjoying sheltering in the shade there for a moment.
      So cool to hear that you admire Millais' Ophelia. It is a virtuoso work of art, isn't it? I like the work of Millais and his fellow Pre-Raphaelite painters. They had an awe for beauty wherever they saw it, in nature, in art and architecture, in literature, in the stories of the Bible and in mythology. I hope you can come face to face with 'Ophelia' some day. David :-)

    You have a cat called Beetlejuice and I think the name sounds interesting.

      Hi Kazuki, It is indeed a blessing to have a job that you enjoy. It is worthwhile seeking out such a job.
      Beetlejuice is apparently the name of a constellation. My daughter's cat already had this name when she received him from an animal shelter.

      Hi Chinatsu. My favourite movie is actually a Science Fiction movie -- '2001: A Space Odyssey.' It is a tremendously beautiful movie. The sets, cinematography and music are sublime. Check out the trailer online.

    Nice to meet you, Mr. David.
    I am glad to meet and give a chance to study an English from you.

    So, I understood what you are interested in various things.
    In my case, when I go overseas, I definitely go to museums.
    Especially, to understand other culture and histories, heritages, it means to give a lot of imagines and reflect the times for me.
    Many of museum makes a me happy and give an indescribable message, I think.

    What most impression art or museum that you had visited?
    I would like you to share your opinion at your convenience.

      Hi Nozomi, I love visiting museums too when I visit regions I haven't been to before. An amazing museum I recently went to was the Tairawhiti Museum in Gisborne, New Zealand. They had some beautiful Maori canoe oars there which were given to Captain Cook and other seamen during their visits to New Zealand in the 18th Century. It was amazing to see them. The standard of craftsmanship evident in these objects was sublime.

    Hi, David! I like walking, too. I don't like it before because I just thought walking makes me tired but since I become a university student, I had many walking time. And I noticed walking can refresh and stay healthy. So, I became to love walking!
    I could have a fun time in this class last week so I will enjoy the rest of a week!

      Taking a walk can enable you to clear your head and get some necessary exercise. I'm not walking as much as I once did as I have been working from home lately, but the need to take our dog for a walk ensures that I get at least one walk a day, and I have to say I do enjoy these walks.
      Where do you take your walks? Around campus? From your accommodation to your classrooms? To the library? To the shops?

    Dear Mr. David,

    Thank you for your reply.
    I was glad to hear from you about your visited museum in NZ.
    I thought that I would like to go there and exposed to Māori cultures that you informed.
    Your culture is respected by all your NZ people, I think.

    Regarding your question, this is not a museum, but I would like to introduce one of Taipei's Three Great Mausoleums.
    I went to Taiwan before pandemic, almost five years ago.
    At first, I wanted to see of “National Palace Museum,” but my friend didn’t want to go there, as a result, I balked of own hope.

    Best of the bunch was, we went to Longshan Temple.
    And the nickname is said to be "department store of merit" and "department store of merit".
    why? Speaking of which, this is a temple where peace, health, schoolwork, romance, and many other gods with strong powers are enshrined, and the benefits of merit are packed!
    In addition, there are more than 100 gods, big and small.

    I was surprised that it was built in 1738. With over 290 years, it is considered to be the oldest temple in Taipei.
    Besides that, Taiwan is an attractive place because the old and the current blend together. I would like to go there again!

   Yesterday morning, Yamaguchi-gumi, a right-wing pressure group, attacked the Asahi newspaper company in Tokyo. As a result, about 20 members of the group were arrested. Hello! My name is Yu Obata, please call me Yu. I grew up in Niigata, and I live in an apartment near the Niigata University with my twin sister who also belong to Niigata University.
